Clusters, Cassettes and Chain Rings

Clusters, cassettes, and chainrings are essential components of a bicycle’s drivetrain. Clusters refer to the set of gears on the rear wheel, while cassettes are a type of cluster that can be removed from the wheel hub. Chainrings are the gears attached to the crankset at the front.

These components should be replaced when they show signs of wear such as teeth thinning or bending, which can cause slipping or skipping while riding. It’s crucial to replace your chain at the same time because a new chain on worn gears can accelerate wear, and an old chain on new gears won’t mesh properly, leading to poor performance and potential damage.

Some basic things to look at when buying a Cassette, Cluster or Chainring include:

  • Speed Compatibility: The number of gears (speeds) on your cassette must match your shifter’s capabilities. For example, a 10-speed shifter requires a 10-speed cassette.

  • Design Compatibility: Certain bikes require specific chainring sizes or cassette ranges, especially for optimal performance in certain terrains or riding styles.
